Linked to a wide network of creative and cultural organisations we support the implementation of UNESCO’s Convention on Diversity of Cultural Expressions, 2005, the first international treaty to recognise that creative work has both cultural and economic value, and to safeguard the sovereignity of nations in developing cultural policy. It’s a unique feature of this treaty that it provides for civil society to play an active role in its implementation (Article 11).
The UKCCD advises government and the UK Commission for UNESCO on the Convention, alerts UK civil society organisations to issues covered by its articles, liaises with our international partners and holds events to publicise and safeguard the objectives of the Convention.
UKCCD is a founder member of the International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity, IFCCD. Currently there are 42 member coalitions organised in 5 regional groups. Our regional grouping, the European Coalitions for Cultural Diversity, ECCD, holds regular meetings to monitor the impact of national and European policy on diversity of cultural expressions in areas such as trade, cultural protocols, education, copyright, public service broadcasting, audiovisual and development strategy. Our submissions to the European Union can be found in the archive.
We also actively campaign for recognition of the role played by cultural and creative industries in achieving sustainable development goals. This is a key objective of the Convention (Articles 14-17) and relevant to ongoing discussions on the post 2015 Millenium Development Goals.
UKCCD is a not-for-profit organisation. More details can be found on the Activities and Archive section of this site
