U40 Capacity Building Program

“Cultural Diversity 2030″ (U 40)

A capacity building programme for young experts and researchers on the issues of implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005).

The interdisciplinary capacity building programme U 40 “Cultural Diversity 2030″ was initiated by the German Commission for UNESCO in 2007 as part of the German EU Council presidency. The U40-process offers young experts Under 40ies – postgraduates, PhD students, young professionals, and similarly qualified young experts – the opportunity to participate in the international debate on Cultural Diversity and the implementation of theUNESCO Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions(2005). The program aims to strenthen the networks and invest in the knowledge of the future decision makers and implementors of the UNESCO Convention from all over the world.

Having started with around 20 researhers and experts from Europe, today the programme involves 50 young specialists from all world regions with proven competence and interest in the areas related to the Convention scope.

Forum “Promoting Diversity of Cultural Expression in the UK” Postponed

The Forum “Promoting Diversity of Cultural Expression in the UK” due to take place on the 10th of December 2010 at City University has been postponed until Spring due to technical reasons.

Forum “Promoting Diversity of Cultural Expression in the UK”

Dear Participants,

We are currently preparing the follow up event of the Forum for Young Leaders on Cultural Policy, which was organised by the UK Coalition for Cultural Diversity (UKCCD) on June 4th at City University in London.

The Forum “Promoting Diversity of Cultural Expression in the UK” will take place on 10 December 2010 from 2-5pm at the same location – City University in London.

How can UNESCO’s Convention strengthen UK Cultural Policy? Based on a CALL FOR SUBMISSION of ideas as to how the Convention might be implemented in the UK and what the role of the U40 group might be, a core group of 20 participants will be identified who will then take the idea forward. Please find the call including all necessary information attached to this e-mail. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2010. Please note that due to a very limited budget for the event we will ask for a £5 cover charge.

The U40 group we are now planning to establish for the UK offers young people Under 40 – postgraduates, PhD students, young professionals, and similarly qualified experts – the opportunity to participate in the international debate on Cultural Diversity and the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expression (2005). The U40 group in the UK will advance action to further the aims of UNESCO’s Convention, a unique instrument for international cultural policy and exchange which puts culture at the centre of development agendas.

Forum for Young Leaders on Cultural Policy

June 4th 2010, 10.00am ‐ 2.00pm

A high profile, international platform for young professionals, students and educators in the cultural, arts and educational sectors. The forum aims to advance research and action to further the aims of Unesco’s Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, (2005), a unique instrument for international cultural policy and exchange which puts culture at the centre of development agendas.

Speakers from key organisations working in cultural policy in the UK will join representatives from the international, U 40 programme, a growing network of young cultural professionals working to support the aims of Unesco’s Convention worldwide.

International Seminar Culture and Development 2010

The International Culture and Development Seminar 2010 will take place on 4-5 May in Girona, Spain.

The Seminar’s primary target will be to encourage the agents responsible for cooperation in partner and donor countries, and in International Organizations, to integrate culture in their development policies.

The Seminar will review experiences reflecting that investing in culture is a way to attain diverse objectives in the fight against poverty, and will analyse a series of programmes and projects that can serve as a collection of “best practices”.

The event is organised, under Spanish EU Presidency, in the city of Girona with the collaboration of the University of Girona, which holds the pioneering UNESCO Chair for Cultural Policies and Cooperation.

Monitoring the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

The European Institute for Comparative Cultural Research have recently updated the monitoring of cultural policies and trends in Europe. THe table was made following a decision at the 5th Compendium Authors meeting held in Budapest Spring 2006 to begin monitoring the UNESCO Convention among Compendium countries, going beyond the information published on the relevant UNESCO website.

Information responding to the following questions is updated on a regular basis:

Which countries have ratified the Convention?
Who is responsible for its implementation?
Are there civil society organisations involved in the process?

Diana Mavroleon in discussion with Sergio López Figueroa, Founder and Director of Big Bang Lab, about the music and film project ‘Delhi City Symphony’ and the development of CSR Cultural Social Responsibility.

Mavrolen and López Figueroa will be discussing the role of culture towards social change, sustainability and socio-economic development, presenting a Big Bang Lab case study.
